#809 Psalm 23 – Dwelling in God’s Provision

Good Day Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

When examining the Hebrew word for “house” one realizes that it is translated numerous ways throughout the Old Testament.  Although it does not mean we can go off into left field making interpretations of the last part of verse six of Psalm 23, it does mean that there will be various interpretations that may be correct without contradicting other portions of God’s Word.  One such interpretation is that David is stating that he will be living within the sphere of God’s provision and protection for the remainder of his life.  This certainly corresponds to what he is saying throughout the first five verses of the Psalm, and the fact he is anticipating God’s goodness and mercy following him all the days of his life would support this interpretation.  For we as Christians, that is exactly what we do when we dwell with our Good Shepherd and Savior, Jesus Christ.  Trusting Him brings His provision and protection upon us.

Trusting God’s provision and protection is an assurance you can have when you dwell in His house forever!

“Being enriched in every thing to all bountifulness, which causeth through us thanksgiving to God.”   (II Corinthians 9:11)

#772 Psalm 23 – “The Lord Will Provide”

Good Day Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The phrase, “I shall not want,” is another title of God: YHWH-Jireh, also referred to as Jehovah-Jireh.  This title of God means “the Lord will provide” or “the Lord will see to it,” stressing the Lord’s provision for His people.  When we think of the Lord providing for David as he states in this Psalm, we also know that this same God provided for Abraham a ram as a substitute sacrifice instead of Isaac.  We also know that God provided for us His Son, Jesus Christ, as the ultimate sacrifice.[1]  As His sheep, we do not lack care as He will provide for and see to it our needs are met, and one of our greatest needs is assurance of eternal security, an assurance only our Great Shepherd can provide.  Whether one has this assurance depends totally on one’s genuine acceptance of God’s provision for all of us, His Son, Jesus Christ.

If you are one of the sheep of the Great Shepherd, are you not thankful for the provision that has been provided for you?

“And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns:  and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.  And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh [The LORD Will Provide]:  as it is said to this day, ‘In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.’”   (Genesis 22:13-14)
